What happens between rehearsal and opening night

Performances, rehearsals and festivals. The most precious moments are the ones the audience never sees, that is where real theatre begins.

Stage light

What happens between rehearsal and opening night, what the audience never sees. I photograph theatre the way I feel it… light, gesture, the tension right before the actor stops acting and starts being.

FAQ

Before you invite me to a rehearsal

Every production and every ensemble works differently, so these answers are a general picture. Tell me what performance or collaboration you have in mind and I'll answer with specifics.

How is theatre photography different from regular event photography?

Theatre has its own rules: the light shifts constantly, actors won't repeat a moment on request, and the key beat often lasts a split second. I shoot it from the inside, knowing the rhythm of rehearsal and performance, not from the side like a random spectator.

Do you shoot only premieres, or rehearsals too?

Both. The most interesting frames often come from rehearsals, before everything's polished, that's where you see the real work, not just the final effect.

How do you handle poor stage lighting?

That's just how theatre is, so I shoot without flash to avoid disturbing the performance, and rely on gear that holds up in low light. The Nikon Z9 forgives a lot here.

How many photos does the theatre get from one performance?

Enough to tell the whole performance, poster, press materials and social media, without repeating the same scene twice. We agree on the scope together, based on what the photos are for.

How does the licence work, posters, media, the theatre's social media?

We settle that as part of the collaboration, using a photo on a poster and a billboard is different from one social media post. Just tell me where the photos will appear.

Is a long-term collaboration as resident photographer possible?

Yes, that's how I've worked with the Norwid Theatre for several years now, season after season. If you're looking for someone long-term, get in touch and we'll talk terms.
